TL;DR: The "No Permission, No Travel" Rule

As of February 25, 2026, the UK border is strictly enforcing the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirement for citizens of 85 countries (including the US, Canada, Australia, and EU nations).

  • Impact: Airlines are actively denying boarding to passengers without a valid ETA.
  • Cost & Validity: £16 per person. Valid for 2 years (or until passport expires).

Warning for Dual Nationals: Do not attempt to travel using a non-UK passport if you are a British citizen without an ETA. You will be denied boarding. See below.

Why Dual Citizens are Being Denied Boarding

The most critical point of failure in the February 2026 rollout is affecting dual nationals (e.g., individuals holding both US and UK citizenship). Previously, dual nationals might travel to the UK using their US passport and rely on "implied right of entry" or explaining their status at the border. This is no longer possible.

British citizens cannot apply for an ETA. Therefore, if you attempt to check in for a flight using your US (or other non-UK) passport, the airline's system will prompt for an ETA. Because you are British, you cannot get one. The system will issue a "Do Not Board" directive.

The Solution for Dual Nationals

You must travel using a valid UK Passport OR present a digital Certificate of Entitlement linked to your foreign passport. Paper certificates are increasingly facing scrutiny and causing delays at check-in desks.

Heathrow & Manchester Disruption (Feb 2026)

Our correspondents at major UK hubs report significant bottlenecks as the strict enforcement begins. Unprepared travelers are scrambling to apply for the ETA at check-in counters.

  • Check-in Delays: Expect 15-20 minute delays per affected passenger as airline staff verify digital links.
  • Flight Delays: Over 400 inbound flights to the UK have experienced minor to moderate departure delays this week due to boarding verification issues.

Pro Tip: If your flight is delayed or you are stuck due to an ETA processing hold, securing a flexible airport hotel immediately is crucial. Inventory at LHR and MAN is dropping rapidly as stranded passengers book rooms.

INDUSTRY REPORT

"According to TravelCheap's February 2026 Border Report, the shift to 100% digital enforcement means that 'implied right of entry' is dead; without a digitally linked ETA or UK passport, carriers are now facing £10,000 fines per passenger, making boarding denials the new norm for unprepared travelers."
