Best time to visit Cinque Terre, season by season
By the TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 18, 2026
The best time to visit Cinque Terre is mid-May to mid-June or early September. The weather is warm, the sea is swimmable, and the villages are busy but not packed. July and August are the hottest and most crowded months, and in winter many places close but you get the villages almost to yourself.
The park prices its train card by how busy a day is expected to be, which makes a handy crowd forecast: green days are the quietest, red days the busiest.
How busy each period is (and what the train card costs)
| Day type in 2026 | When | 1-day Treno Card, adult |
|---|---|---|
| Green (low crowds) | March, plus weekdays in May and October | €22.00 |
| Yellow (medium) | April, June, September, plus weekdays in July and August | €29.50 |
| Red (high) | National holidays (Easter, May 1, August 15) and weekends in July and August | €35.00 |
| Low season | November 2, 2026 to March 12, 2027 | €17.30 |
High-season prices apply March 14 to November 1, 2026. Source: Cinque Terre Card 2026 prices and seasons (cinqueterre.eu.com).

Compare hotels in LevantoSpring (March to May)
March is when restaurants and activities start to reopen and days reach around 15°C. By April most businesses and some boat tours are running, and ferries start on March 28. May is usually drier and around 20°C, with everything open and a cold first swim possible.
Watch out for Easter and May 1: both are red days with the highest train card price and big crowds. Monterosso’s lemon festival takes place over a weekend in May.
Summer (June to August)
June is the sweet spot for warm weather and a low chance of rain. July and August bring heat around 30°C, the most visitors of the year and crowded trains, so hike early in the morning or late in the day. It is the best season for swimming and boat trips.
Summer festivals include San Giovanni on June 24 in Monterosso and Riomaggiore (with fireworks in Monterosso), Santa Margherita on July 20 in Vernazza and San Lorenzo on August 10 in Manarola, with a procession and the blessing of the sea.
Autumn (September to November)
Early September is still warm and good for hiking, with fewer people than August. October is often wet, and trails can close in bad weather because of landslide risk. November weather changes quickly and many businesses close.
The high season ends on November 1, 2026: ferries stop, the train card drops to €17.30 and trains run less often. In 2024 the stormy period ran from about mid-September to late October, so keep plans flexible in autumn.
Winter (December to February)
Daytime highs rarely drop below 10°C. Clear days are good for walking, but trails often close for repairs, and many restaurants and hotels shut. Trains run once or twice an hour.
Manarola’s illuminated nativity scene lights up the hillside from early December (local listings say from December 8) to the end of January. In low season, La Spezia or Levanto make livelier bases.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest time to visit Cinque Terre?
Low season, from November 2 to mid-March, has the lowest train card price (€17.30 a day) and the easiest rooms to find. Within high season, green days (March and weekdays in May and October) are the cheapest for the card.
Is October a good time to go?
It can be, but it is often wet, and trails may close after heavy rain because of landslide risk. Pick October if you mostly want the villages and food, and keep a spare day for hiking.
When can you swim in Cinque Terre?
Summer is best. A quick dip is possible from May, and some people still swim in Monterosso in November on warm days.
Do the ferries run all year?
No. In 2026 the ferry season runs from March 28 to November 1, and boats can be cancelled at short notice in bad weather.
