Cinque Terre travel guide 2026
By the TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 18, 2026
Cinque Terre is a chain of five villages on the Ligurian coast of Italy: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They sit inside a national park and are linked by a local train that runs about every 20 minutes from March 14 to November 1, 2026. Most hops between villages take 4 to 6 minutes, and La Spezia to Riomaggiore takes about 9.
The cheapest way to do it: sleep in La Spezia or Levanto, ride the train into the villages, and pick your days. On the quietest days a one-day train and trail card costs €22, on the busiest €35. Driving into the villages is possible but parking is small and the centres are closed to visitor traffic.

A simple one-day plan by train
- Start early in Riomaggiore (9 minutes from La Spezia) and, if you booked a slot, walk the Via dell’Amore to Manarola.
- Take the train from Manarola to Corniglia (the coastal path between them is closed) and use the shuttle bus or the stairs up to the village.
- Train to Vernazza for lunch by the harbour.
- Fit hikers can walk Vernazza to Monterosso (about 2 hours). Everyone else takes the 4-minute train.
- Finish on the beach in Monterosso, then ride the train back to Levanto or La Spezia.
A one-day Treno Card covers the trains and the trails, so it pays off if you plan five or more rides or any time on the Blue Trail. See tickets and the card for the maths.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Cinque Terre?
You can see all five villages in one long day by train. Two or three days lets you hike a section of the Blue Trail, take a boat and enjoy the villages early and late, when day visitors have left.
Do I need the Cinque Terre Card?
Only if you hike the coastal Blue Trail or ride the train a lot. The Trekking Card (trails only) starts at €10 a day. The Treno Card adds unlimited trains between Levanto and La Spezia and costs €22 to €35 a day for an adult in high season. Single train tickets cost €5 to €10.
Can you drive between the villages?
Yes, but it is slow and parking is limited. Non-residents cannot drive into the village centres, so you park at a lot at the entrance and walk or take a shuttle. Most visitors leave the car in Levanto or La Spezia and use the train.
Is Cinque Terre expensive?
Rooms are the big cost. A local guide says a decent double room is hard to find under €125 even in low season. Staying in La Spezia or Levanto and eating focaccia and takeaway seafood at lunch keeps costs down.
