How this travel budget calculator works
The calculator uses typical 2026 daily cost ranges for each destination, expressed in US dollars per person and excluding flights. Budget figures cover a hostel or budget hotel bed, inexpensive local meals, public transport and a couple of paid activities. Mid-range multiplies every budget figure by 2.5, reflecting a comfortable hotel, sit-down restaurant meals and more paid experiences.
Your total trip cost is the daily range multiplied by the number of nights and the number of travelers, plus the optional flight cost per person multiplied by travelers. The breakdown bar shows how the daily budget typically splits: accommodation 40%, food 30%, local transport 10% and activities 20%. These proportions hold broadly across destinations, though cheaper cities lean a little more toward food and activities because accommodation is a smaller share.
The figures are estimates, not quotes. Real spending depends on the season, how far ahead you book, the exchange rate and your own choices. Use the total as a planning target, then check live prices with the flight and hotel buttons above. For a worked example of every cost line, see our Paris trip cost breakdown.
Budget vs mid-range: what changes
The single biggest lever in any trip cost is travel style. Budget travel means a dorm bed or a simple private room in a budget hotel, street food or market meals, public transport and free or low-cost sights. Mid-range travel means a three- or four-star hotel in a central area, a mix of casual and sit-down restaurants, taxis or ride-shares for convenience, and paid tours or museums most days.
That difference is why the calculator multiplies by 2.5 for mid-range. In a city like Paris, a budget traveler might spend about $90-130 a day while a mid-range traveler spends about $225-325. The destination is the same; the room, the table and the transport are not. If your total looks high, try switching to Budget first, then trim nights or travelers to see the effect.
7 ways to lower your trip cost
- Book flights in the sweet spot, about three weeks to three months ahead. See our guide to the best time to book flights.
- Fly midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday departures regularly beat Friday and Sunday on the same route.
- Stay outside the city centre near a metro or bus line. The room saving dwarfs the transit fare.
- Eat one main meal at lunch, when the set menu is cheaper than dinner for the same food.
- Picnic one meal a day from a market or supermarket.
- Walk the centre; most sights are within a 20-minute stroll of each other.
- Book a refundable rate early and keep watching. If the price drops, cancel and rebook. More tactics in our budget travel hacks guide.

How do I calculate a travel budget?
Multiply the daily cost per person by the number of nights and travelers, then add the flight cost for each person and a 10% buffer for surprises. The calculator above does this automatically; just pick a destination, nights, travelers and style.
How much should I budget per day for travel?
About $30-60 per person per day in Southeast Asia and the Balkans on a budget, and about $90-170 in big Western cities like New York, London and Paris. Mid-range travel roughly multiplies the budget figure by 2.5.
Does the estimate include flights?
Only if you enter a flight cost per person in the optional field. Without it, the estimate covers accommodation, food, local transport and activities at your destination only.
How accurate is the estimate?
The figures are typical 2026 budget ranges, not quotes. Real prices depend on your exact dates, the season, how far ahead you book and the exchange rate. Always check live prices before booking.
