US domestic fares are lowest 22 to 57 days before departure in Google Flights data.

That pattern ran about 14% cheaper than weekend trips.

Use the 24-hour rule

How to Find Cheap Flights in 2026

By TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 16, 2026

Cheap flights come from three habits: booking inside the right window, flying on the cheaper days of the week, and comparing many sites at once instead of one airline. According to Google's 2026 Flights data, US domestic fares are lowest about 39 days before departure and international fares about 89 days out.

The day you book barely matters. Wednesday was the cheapest day to buy, but only about 1.4% cheaper than Sunday. Your travel dates, the airports you pick and whether you accept a connection move the price far more.

Flexible Dates for Budget Flights

A month view or a flexible-date search shows the cheapest days around your trip. Moving your departure by a day or two often changes the fare more than anything else you can do.

Off-Peak Travel for Cheaper Airfare

Fares climb around school breaks and major holidays. The weeks just before and after peak season are usually cheaper on the same route.

When is the cheapest time to book a flight?

Book US domestic flights about five to six weeks ahead and international flights two to four months ahead. Holiday trips need more lead time. These windows come from Google Flights and cover departures from the US.

Which days are cheapest to fly?

Monday departures with a Tuesday or Wednesday return were about 14% cheaper than weekend travel in Google's analysis, and up to 20% cheaper than a Sunday-to-Sunday domestic trip. Nonstop tickets cost about 20% more on average than itineraries with a connection. If you have a spare few hours, a one-stop flight is often the easiest saving.

Step by step: how to search for cheap airfare

  1. Search with flexible dates, using a month view or a few days either side.
  2. Add nearby airports at both ends of the trip.
  3. Compare one-stop and nonstop options side by side.
  4. Compare the total price with bags and seats, not the base fare.
  5. Set a price alert once you know the route.
  6. Book inside the window from the table above.
  7. If your plans might change, use the 24-hour rule or buy a fare that allows changes.

Fees and rules to check before you book

  • Basic economy. It is the cheapest fare class on many airlines, but it often leaves out seat selection and changes. Price it against the next fare up before you buy.
  • The 24-hour rule. For flights to, from or within the US booked at least seven days ahead, airlines must offer free cancellation within 24 hours or a 24-hour fare hold (Consumer Reports).
  • Refunds in the US. Under the DOT automatic refund rule, you get your money back if the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight and you decline the alternative. Significant means 3 or more hours on domestic flights and 6 or more on international ones.
  • Flights covered by EU rules. Long delays and late cancellations can bring compensation of 250 to 600 euros, unless the airline proves extraordinary circumstances. Check the current rules on the EU's Your Europe site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers on booking windows, cheap days to fly, refunds and fees.

For US domestic trips, Google Flights data shows the lowest average fares about 39 days before departure, inside a 22 to 57 day window. International fares are lowest around 89 days out, but prices barely move between 50 and 133 days. Holiday trips need more lead time, for example about 56 days for Christmas.
Leaving on a Monday and returning on a Tuesday or Wednesday was about 14% cheaper than weekend travel in Google's 2026 analysis, and Sunday is usually the most expensive day to fly. The day you book matters much less: booking on a Wednesday was only about 1.4% cheaper than on a Sunday.
Usually not. In Google's data, domestic fares were lowest weeks before departure, not in the final days. Summer trips are the main exception, with low prices lasting until about 21 days out.
For flights to, from or within the US booked at least seven days before departure, airlines must either let you cancel without penalty within 24 hours or hold the fare for 24 hours without payment. Each airline picks which of the two it offers, so check before you buy.
In the US, airlines must refund you automatically if they cancel or significantly change your flight and you turn down the alternative they offer. A significant change includes leaving or arriving 3 or more hours off schedule on a domestic flight, or 6 or more hours on an international one. On flights covered by EU rules you may also be owed 250 to 600 euros in compensation for long delays or late cancellations.
On average, yes. Nonstop tickets cost about 20% more than connecting itineraries in Google's data. If you have the time, a one-stop flight is often the simplest way to lower the fare.
Check seat selection, carry-on and checked bag fees, and the change rules on basic economy fares. Some booking sites also add payment or currency conversion fees. Compare the total price for the trip, not just the base fare.
You need a passport that stays valid for the whole trip, and many countries ask for more validity than that, often six months beyond arrival. Some destinations also require a visa or an electronic travel authorization. Check the official entry rules for your destination before you book.
