Airport or city pickup: which car rental is cheaper?
By the TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 18, 2026
A city or off-airport branch is often cheaper, because airport desks add fees that downtown desks do not, such as concession recovery fees and daily facility charges. Whether you really save depends on what it costs to reach the branch, its opening hours and how long you rent: the longer the rental, the more the daily airport fees add up.
For short trips, late arrivals or families with a lot of luggage, the airport often still makes more sense. Price both for the same dates before you book.
Airport vs city pickup at a glance
| Airport desk | City or off-airport branch | |
|---|---|---|
| Extra fees | Airport concession or location fees, sometimes a daily facility charge | Usually no airport fees |
| Getting the car | Ready when you land | Taxi, train or shuttle to the branch first |
| Opening hours | Long hours, late arrivals usually covered | Often shorter; many close in the evening and on Sundays |
| Car choice | Usually the widest fleet | Smaller fleet, so book ahead |
| Best for | Short rentals, late arrivals, families with luggage | Longer rentals, or trips that start with a few car-free days in the city |

Compare car rental pricesHow much do airport fees add?
- In the US, Kiplinger says airport concession fees range from a few dollars to $10 or more a day.
- In Las Vegas, Las Vegas Advisor listed a 10% concession recovery fee plus a $4 daily facility charge in 2019, worth about $50 to $60 on a weekly rental.
- In Italy, an April 2026 Moneyside guide estimated airport surcharges at about €6 to €8 a day at Genoa and €12 to €14 a day at Milan Malpensa, based on its own sample of quotes.
These are examples, not fixed prices. Fees vary by airport, company and date, so the total price for your dates is what counts.
When the city branch wins
- You rent for several days, so daily airport fees add up.
- The branch is a short, cheap ride from the airport or your hotel.
- You spend the first days in the city and do not need a car yet.
- The branch is open when you need it, for both pickup and return.
When the airport still wins
- Short rentals of a day or two, where the fee total is small.
- Late-night or early-morning flights, when city branches are closed.
- Families with children and luggage, where an extra taxi or train ride costs time and money.
- When the city branch charges more for the car itself, which can cancel out the saving.
How to compare in two minutes
- Search the airport and a city branch for the same dates and car class.
- Compare the total price with taxes and fees, not the daily rate.
- Add the cost of getting to the city branch (taxi, train or shuttle).
- Check opening hours and whether out-of-hours returns are allowed.
- Check the fuel policy and the damage excess, which can matter more than the pickup fee.

Frequently asked questions
Are airport car rentals more expensive?
Often, because airports add concession or location fees and sometimes a daily facility charge. City branches usually skip those fees, but they can have higher base rates or shorter hours, so compare the total price.
What is an airport concession recovery fee?
A fee rental companies charge to recover what they pay to operate at the airport. It is usually a percentage of the rental and appears in the taxes and fees, not in the daily rate.
Can I pick up in the city and return at the airport?
Often yes, but some companies charge a one-way or location fee for returning to a different branch. Check the total before you book.
Is it worth taking a taxi to an off-airport rental?
It can be on longer rentals, when the airport fees you skip are larger than the taxi fare. On a one- or two-day rental the saving is usually small.
