What to see in Venice, from no-stairs to all-day walking

By the TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 28, 2026

Venice has hundreds of bridges, most with steps, so plan by how much you can walk. If stairs are hard, use the city's accessible maps and the vaporetto: many sights are reachable from a boat stop without crossing a stepped bridge.

The big tickets add up. The Doge's Palace costs €35 at the door or €30 if booked online 30 or more days ahead, and the Basilica has its own tickets. The islands of Murano and Burano cost nothing beyond the boat.

If bridges and stairs are hard

The Comune di Venezia publishes accessible maps that colour each block by how you can reach it: by vaporetto, by water bus with a step-free landing, or over an adapted bridge. They also list bridges with lifts or low steps and public toilets. The maps were last updated in 2017 to 2019, so confirm details with ACTV (Accessible Venice maps (Comune di Venezia)).

  • Ride the Grand Canal by vaporetto. It is the cheapest way to see the palaces along the water.
  • Go out to Murano and Burano by boat; both islands are flat around the main streets.
  • Visitors with a disability and one companion don't pay the day-tripper access fee.

Murano, Burano and Torcello by boat

If you can walk all day

  1. Start at the Rialto market in the morning, then cross to San Marco before the day crowds arrive.
  2. Walk east along the water through Castello to the Arsenale and the Biennale gardens.
  3. Cross to Dorsoduro by vaporetto for the Accademia and the Zattere promenade at sunset.
  4. Finish with cicchetti in Cannaregio, along the Fondamenta degli Ormesini.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venice accessible for wheelchairs?

Partly. The Comune di Venezia publishes maps showing which areas you can reach by boat or adapted bridges. Many sights are reachable from a vaporetto stop, but most bridges have steps.

How much does the Doge's Palace cost?

€35 at the door, €30 online if booked 30 or more days ahead, and €15 reduced.

How do I get to Burano?

Take vaporetto line 12 from Fondamente Nove. The trip takes about 45 minutes and boats run roughly every 30 minutes.

Do I pay the access fee to visit Murano and Burano?

No. The fee applies only to the historic centre, not the lagoon islands.
