How to get to Venice, and where to park

By the TravelCheap Editorial Team · Updated October 28, 2026

The cheapest way from Marco Polo airport into Venice is a bus to Piazzale Roma: about 20 minutes for €10 to €12. The Alilaguna boat is slower and costs €18, but it drops you closer to many hotels and includes a large bag.

If you drive, you can't go past Piazzale Roma. Parking there costs €35 or more a day, so many people park near Mestre station for less and take a 10 to 12 minute train in.

Alilaguna includes one large and one small bag; each extra bag is €4. Its winter timetable starts on 28 October 2026 and the red line is suspended until spring.

Already holding an ACTV vaporetto pass? The airport bus then costs a €7 one-way supplement instead of the full fare (Venice urban services: tickets and passes (ACTV)).

By train: Santa Lucia or Mestre?

Venezia Santa Lucia is in the historic centre, at the start of the Grand Canal. Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. Trains between the two run constantly and take 10 to 12 minutes, so a hotel near Mestre station is a practical cheaper base. Validate paper regional tickets before you board (Mestre to Venice by train (Europe for Visitors)).
